This eulogy example is for a grandpa. It can easily be customized to be a grandma eulogy.

“When I was asked to prepare a eulogy for my grandfather, I was forced to take a trip down memory lane. Please join me for a moment as I would like to share some fond memories of grandpa.

I remember spending one night every weekend at my grandparent’s house in (name place). My grandparents used to let me sleep in between them. They said it was because they were too old to check on me in the middle of the night but I think it is because they wanted to snuggle me all night. Their body heat would cause me to wake up in a warm sweat, pajamas soaked with sweat like I had just run a marathon. I also learned that snoring can be so loud that it can sound like a freight train crossing in the middle of the night!

My grandfather used to love taking me for a walk in the park. He was a nature lover and I think that he wanted to impress upon me the beauty and majesty of the large oak trees. He would always note the changing seasons and tell me to pay attention to buds on the trees or the first tinge of yellow in the leaves. In the winter I would pester my grandparents to let me make snow angels. The cold weather did not bother me as I was bundled up in a snowsuit. However, with grandpa’s arthritis I’m sure the last thing that he wanted to be doing was pulling me in a sleigh like a tugboat in the bitter cold.

In the summer, grandpa would help me wash his new car. I would scrub the tires and polish the rims under the blazing hot sun. My compensation was a mere dollar which felt like all the gold in Babylon to a five year old. Little did I realize that he was quite skillful at making use of cheap labor. He would tell me to save up for something special. The first thing I bought with my hard earned savings was a brand new (enter item) baseball glove which spawned my love of the game.

When my mother would come and pick me up from my grandparent’s house, I would cry in protest. I would hurl baseballs or toys at my mother to prevent her from picking me up. Yes, on the one hand, I was practicing my pitching skills, yet on the other hand it was testament to how much I enjoyed spending time with Grandpa.

As I grew older, I learned to appreciate the sarcastic sense of humor that my grandfather had. During family dinners, I laughed at the comedic sparring with his sons. I’ll never forget the time he and Uncle (enter Uncle’s name) Rick bantered about what it feels like to be a fan of the New York Jets (enter losing sports team). Grandpa would say “you would think with all this losing we would find a new team. We’re not fans, we’re masochists.”

In the last years of his life, I was able to spend time with grandpa in Florida. We actually spent time together as little as two months ago. He sat around and played backgammon and he loved beating me mercilessly. In between games, he would impart a little wisdom that would stick in my mind on the trip back to (enter city). Above all, he would say: “at the end of life you never think about when you made an ass of yourself, when everyone laughed at you or joked at your expense. The only things that rumble through your mind and keep you awake at night are the things that you did not get around to doing.”

I am proud to say that when it comes to my grandfather I have no regrets. We spent time together and got to know each other well. He enriched my life with his love, generosity and sharp wit. I’m sure if he were today, he would say that he had no regrets about all the play time he shared with his (enter number) four grandchildren.
